Background

On January 1, 1998, 72 district school boards were established in Ontario, replacing 129 school boards. At the same time, 37 smaller, geographically isolated boards and hospital school boards were renamed "school authorities".

The 72 new district school boards include 12 new French-language boards. Of the 60 new English-language district school boards, 36 are the result of the amalgamation of two or more old school boards. The 37 school authorities were further restructured to reduce the number to 33. This web site makes a variety of useful information on over 5000 public schools, 72 district school boards and 33 school authorities available to parents, educators and anyone else with an interest in Ontario's education system.

The Ministry goal is to use this site as a means of increasing accountability to the public. This site is an important step toward meeting Ontario's pledge to provide parents, and the public, with the information they need to be full partners in the education of our children.

On July 26, 2001, the Minister of Education announced public posting of the first release of school board profiles. The first release contained 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 school year information for the 72 district school boards and their associated public schools. The second release was posted on June 24, 2002, this release included information on the 2000-2001 school year. Subsequent updates were issued for 2002-2003 through 2004-2005 school years.

On average this site attracts over 10,000 visitors monthly. Public feedback is important to help us to continue developing the site and revise the information provided.
